My Story - Waldon Lim

Last Updated 4/28/03

My life has had a number of turns and twists. After Catalina, I spent a year at the U of A doing a chemistry major. The following year, I was accepted to Stanford where I was a chemistry major. It was a good experience being in a more liberal place than Tucson and the U of A. I got involved in Asian-American activities (although I was a chemistry major). That led me to eventually getting a B.S. in chemistry.

During that time (late 60's), I and other folks became politically active, opposing the Vietnam conflict (I was lucky to have a high draft number. A friend suggested medicine as an avenue to help people. The San Francisco area was a hot bed of anti-war activism. I changed my thinking about chemistry and started on a course to medicine. For a family medicine residency, I spent a year at Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital in Watts, worked for a year after that, and then got into the Family Practice Residency at San Francisco General Hospital (which was a hotbed for social activism in the Bay Area). I did well in the program, and eventually became a Chief Resident.

After that, I was an intern at Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital in Watts, Compton. Then, I returned to the Bay Area and finished my residency. Since then, I worked several Family Practice Residency programs, teaching students and residents.

Unfortunately, I stopped working recently due to an inherited memory loss (unbeknownst to them, they were carriers for the APOE gene which can result in Alzheimer’s' Disease.

I'm now retired from medicine and am at home (my wife is a Family Nurse Practitioner who also works for the San Francisco Department of Public Health). We have 3 kids (Sarah, a sophomore in high school. Sarah has Down syndrome and she is doing very. My middle son, Jason, is a gifted artist and a person with "heart" and Nicky, the youngest, is very interested in science.

Since I'm at home, I have time to communicate with friends from work, college, and now more time to converse with Catalina contacts.

Give me e-mail if you have a chance.

Regards,
Wally
