My Story - John Faick

After Catalina, I stayed in Tucson for six years and studied electrical engineering the U of A (BSEE in 1972, and MSEE in 1974). I DJ'd at several local radio stations to pay my way through school. In 1970, Julie Ferdon introduced me to Marie Hart, who was studying art education. Marie and I were married in 1972. We moved to Santa Rosa, CA in 1974 when I got a job here with Hewlett-Packard designing microwave test equipment.

We had our first child, Beth, in 1981. We started building a home that same year, living in a trailer at the homesite. Beth decided it was time to arrive a couple of weeks after we poured the foundation. I learned a lot about construction in the two years it took to finish the house to the point where we could move in. We had our second child, Kathy, in 1986. We were fortunate that Marie was able to stay home with the girls for a lot of the time when they were little.

In the last several years, Marie has finally gotten the chance to use that art education degree, working as a teacher's aid and art docent at the elementary school level. I still design RF and microwave test instruments for Agilent, which was spun off from HP this year.

Beth is attending the junior college here, planning to finish up her education degree at a one of the California state universities, and wants to be an elementary school teacher. Kathy is a freshman in high school.

My Mother and Dad stayed in Tucson after I left. Mom passed away this year, but taught music and ballet way into her 80's. Dad is still doing fairly well at age 89.

We're very lucky to have two super daughters, and Marie and I have had the opportunity to do the things we enjoy. I miss Tucson, but really love the wine country here. We're fortunate to be reasonably healthy, although we're starting to need a little maintenance once in a while. A little like our house.
